      Capt. Daniel Davis was a shipmaster who sailed the oceans for 42 years, starting when he was only 10 years old.  For 27 of those years he was in foreign trade under the flag of J. S. Winslow of Portland, Maine sailing out of Portland and San Francisco. 

      In 1859, while still living in Westport, Maine, he was a representative to the Maine legislature.  In 1879, his wife made a Homestead Declaration of land in Sonoma County, California and the family, with the exception of son Henry, moved there.

      In 1884, he received the “Red Ribbon” medal from the Emperor of Japan for saving the lives of some Japanese fishermen.
